Description : | these two brick shaped blocks have fish shaped indentations 16 cm long on two facing surfaces with openings at each end for the fishing jig attachment and the opening to pour the lead in for making the piece. Believed to be sandstone but would require a geologist to confirm. The stone appears to have been carved by hand. |
Commentaires : | This mold was dug out from approx two feet underneath the basement of the house at 165 High Street in Pictou during renovations. This house was built in 1906. This stone mold was used for making fishing jigs or lures in place of bait, possibly for fishing cod (there was a large cod fishery during the 1800s) or other larger fish. The lure, or jig, consisted of two or three hooks held together at the shank by a piece of lead molded in the shape of a fish. The rhythmic jigging (a sudden pull upwards and then release) of the line gave the jig the "fluttering action" of a fish. |
