| Description: | illegible Hughes of Australia has made a good name for himself among his illegible to England April 19th 1915 Dear Father, Your letter illegible several days ago and was glad to know you are all well & getting along fine. Am writing this letter in a large YMCA building and I tell you the Y.M.C.A is a great help to the soldiers where they come spend a few hours and I believe it is the thing for the young men of today for it brings them all together & is the best association I know - Just got back at 6:30pm from Liphook [?] 8 miles from our camp as we were down for saddles, blankets, etc but we had 4 horses to a team so made good time - We get up every morning at 5am and go to stables water feed and groom our horses. Our Ammunition illegible which was formed in Halifax but composed mostly of the best men in Prince Edward Island are [?] mules for packing ammunition for they are more illegible than a horse & can stand anything but it is pretty hard to stand illegible from them just the same. Capt. McKinnon who was in charge of Ammunition illegible has been Major of our battery [?] as Major Crowe [?] is too old to go to the front also three more Majors have been turned down but he is going illegible to France & to the illegible line to see things before he returns to Canada - Capt. McKinnon is well known all over Canada. He owns the McKinnon Derby [?] Co of Charlottetown & has some very fast horses so we are lucky in getting such a good man - We moved from Bramshott Camp on Friday eight miles to our present camp at Witley where we are now stationed. This is the finest artillery camp in England and we are the first Canadian soldiers to come here as they are nearly all Englishmen. It is a lot better than Bramshott too & more cleaner & not so wet - One of our boys has pneumonia & is now in hospital at Aldershot, the weather is so damp & the worse diseases are [?] here & taking off a lot of our Canadian boys is Spinal Meningitas [sic] We are very close in fact only a few miles from Godalming a beautiful place and very ancient. Every other place is a pub where you can get your beer & drinks [?] 3 d a glass and the English people are great for some but the illegible has certainly degenerated since the war - the French [?] are holding on very well at Verdun - there are several hospitals here & have lots of poor wounded boys from the front and they are crippled everyway. Think I would just as soon be killed outright then be crippled for life illegible I would be no good to anybody or myself then - several of the boys have been to London & saw that great city but think I will go the last part of the month. We have to buy a lot of grub out of our own little pay to keep us alive & from kicking but when one is going all day can eat mostly anything. Where'er you go it is soldiers and they are coming & going every day. Am told the 185th love such a good man as Lt. Col. Day I went to school with him & his wife at Mt A also the illegible General Lt Col. Barden (?)they are all Mt. A. men - Expect there will be some big fighting this Summer and they might as well go at and finish it up good for surely they aught to be prepared by this time - We may only be here a month or so before we leave for the illegible line for it is gunns [?] that will do the work today - They try to do the Canadians over here illegible the stores etc if you do not understand the English money so one has got to be sharp. Dr. McLean [?], Dentist from Pt, Hastings is at Bramshott [?] Camp with Dr Harry [?] but did not see him before we moved. Had (?) to see more of Hawkesbury boys coming to the illegible for it is after the war people will ask how many men enlisted from Hawkesbury so feel sure they realize the seriousness this big problem to best Germany so it is only by getting men & the best - Had to see the illegible Love to all How is my illegible & mother & all. Have not heard from her since I enlisted - Love Son Jack. |
