Letter: April 23rd 1916 Easter Sunday Dear Father, Received your two letters a few days ago. one addresses to Bramshott the other to London and was certainly delighted to hear from you and to know you are all doing nicely for it is quite a long time before one hears from Canada but late news is better than none. I wrote you several days ago and hope you received some all right. We are now at Whitley Camp and it is a very good camp compared with Bramshott. There is a town only 2 miles distant called Godcalming which is a very ancient and most interesting than three miles distant is the City of Guildford these towns are in the County of Surrey, one of the finest counties in England. There are four or five more brigades stationed here so you see we have a lot of Artillary and they are mostly Western batteries except fore one or two from Hamilton & Toronto yet we have the most Canadian battery of the lot as the rest are made up of a lot of Englishmen who enlisted in Canada. We have a new Major in place of Major Crowe namely Major McKinnon who belongs to Charlottetown & owns the McKinnon Drug Co. besides some of the fastest horses in the Maritime Provinces and when we get to the front believe he will make good so we are very fortunate in securing such a good man as our new major. Major Crowe has gone to France and as he has brought the battery up to the standard it has at present he will be missed very much but he was to old to go to the front and it requires a younger man for the job. This country is very pretty with its hedges & walks no matter where you go yet there is not the life to the country like we have for it is a little too old fashioned. The women are filling the places of men and doing the work well while they are away fighting. This is a lovely day for Easter Sunday and the dandelions & butter cups are up in the fields all round. There is a secret session in the British House on Tuesday in regard to the Compulsion Bill for all. It looks as if the States may be in the fight ere long and it will mean a force on the border line to keep back the eight million Germans in U.S.A. There have been no Zepplin raids of late yet we have been on the lookout when they did some and they have dropped bombs not many miles from this place, If I go to London soon will try and see the Zepplin the British Gunner brought down in the River Thames, Am glad to see that the Hawkesbury boys are coming forward and joining the colors and that R. J. McDougall has enlisted with the 185th. Saw by yesterdays paper where the Russians had landed in France to fight side by side with the French which shows a great unity of all nations. Hope we will soon be ready to go to France for would like to see the Country also Belgium before all is over yet the Allies have got to be busy and let no opportunities slip by without downing the enemy. I was out this morning with two horses to Milford a couple miles from here for beef & bread. All the English soldiers stationed here the Manchesters [?] are returned from the front and being fixed up & prepared to go back again to fight. Have received papers all right, thanks very much. Not received that parcel which you said the Red Cross was sending "Toots" & I don't [?] suppose will be along one of these 'foots (?) from Canada. Must write my Uncle Bert [?] someday when I get time. Hope all are well at home & doing nicely. That McKay fellow you know who is slated to the illegible illegible had the mumps & is in the hospital in Aldershot, Johnnie Stapleton is at the front & has been in some heavy fighting but has pulled through all right.
