Canada Letter Nov. 6/16 x Firing Line x Dear Father, Just a line or two while I can spare the time for it is now dinner time and I am writing illegible my illegible built of illegible any old thing to keep out the cold. We are getting along pretty well and all the Canadians are doing well & holding the best part of the line & are the best fighters on this front. With all their losses they have done whatever they set out to undertake. We have only had a few casualties of men and horses but one can never tell who comes next but that is what we are here for to see the thing through. Got your parcel of 2 pr socks & 4 paks [sic] cigarettes thanks very much, it all comes in good where one has wet feet a lot. It is very muddy where we are and we are plastered all the time. Hugh's brother Jimmy [?] no doubt you heard died in the hospital at Havre [?] where he was operated upon. It is some undertaking driving the Hun [?] back but the Allies have the upperhand and it only wants men & money & everyone working for that one thing "victory" & I hope it will come soon for it is hard spending the best years of your life but someone has to do it or be defeated. Gladys said she saw you & Mother & you looked fine & dandy & that you treated her very nice. I am very well at present & hope you are all well & have been lucky enough to escape so far. I wouldn't mind if you would send me a sweater size 36 a darkish colour & a pr. of gloves leather for driving horses for my hands are all cut up by the wind & mud . Let me know the price and I will try & send some as soon as I can get some money in London for we just got $6 a month[?] in this county & one spends a lot when he gets a chance for something to eat. The Towns & Cities over here are pretty well battered. The last drive the Canadians fought well & the fighting 25th of N.S. & The French Canadians did great work in every way. Seen by a paper where you spoke at Exhibition at Sydney. Do not receive papers very regularly so they must go astray. I have received a few " Jack Canucks" from Uncle Bert which makes good reading. Hope you are doing well & getting along fine. Well I must go and harness up for have to go out so bye for now. Love to all & Mother Your Son Jack P.S. Don't get much chance to write just now. |
