Battery, Milford Camp Whitley [?], Surrey, Eng Sept 5, 1917 Dear Father, Your letter to-hand this evening and as you will notice we have moved from Shorncliffe to Whitley. We left on Sunday morning arriving here at noon by train only a 4 hour run. We were up that morning at 5 a.m. Am well acquainted with this camp for I had the privilege of being here last year with the old 36th [?]. My heavens I have been surprised to hear of poor Marion's death for I thought so much of her and to think of her being so young & taken away. God will take care of her at all costs for she was a good girl all around. No doubt Uncle Bert is put out over same for He & Aunt Corrie [?] thought the world of her. It is too bed and I have written her several times when I was in France but suppose she never got same. No doubt Mother & you went to Arichat to the funeral. Well suppose it can't be helped but what was the real trouble. I will write Uncle Bert right away. This world seems to be getting more crooked every day. Have not seen Dr. Howard in fact I was quite a piece from him at Shorncliffe but I am now allowed to write to anyone like that myself personally. They are sending all kinds of cripples back to Canada but I would have to come up before another board, My back still bothers me & have pains through my arms & legs but not so bad as I had some. They have me batsman for a Captain just an hour's work a day for they can't make a C 111 man do much. I don't like this kind of job for I want to be back to France or Canada. They can either ship me to France or Canada don't want these jobs in England. Lt. Col illegible is here all right but I don't want to make myself known for I have to be paraded [?] to see him & a lot of more red tape. The 185th Battalion is here although a number have gone to France to fill up the 85th. Saw Hugh Gillis the other night and is doing nicely. Allan Grant & some more boys are here but did not see them as yet. The 36th had a lot of casualties a few weeks ago have seen a lot of the boys who have been on leave to England. You remember Capt. Fred whom you met at Fredericton, he was blinded [?], Gordon McKay & others. Suppose Conscription will soon be enforce & bring up the slacker's. Wish to the devil I was fit to go back with the boys but they won't let cases of my kind go back under any circumstances so I can't help it. Glad to hear Boutiliers [?] are erecting a big fish plant for there must be quite a demand for fish. Hope there will be an election for they need a change. See where Stan Bob [?] Rogers has resigned. Also illegible Joe Martin M.P. in the Imperial Government has gone to Canada to uphold [?] Sir Wilfred Beleive [?] he would make a good Premier for Canada. Hope you are all well & doing nicely and that Mother is well. I wrote her from Shorncliffe so expect a letter ere long. Had a letter from Gladys & guess by the time this letter reaches you she will be on her holidays. She intends going to Paradise, N.S. to see her relatives & friends & expects to stop off to see you.
