C Battery, 2nd Reserve Artillery Brigade Milford Camp, Witley, Surrey Oct 1st 1917 Dear Father, Just a few lines to-day so you will know I am still on "Terra Firma". Well, how are you & all at home, hope you are all enjoying life in every day. For myself I am about the same but still working as a batsman for a few Officer's cleaning their boats, belts & spurrs [?] & looking after them in general. It is not a very hard job the only thing it is hard to be a servant but I should worry for worry for anything in the Army seems all right. I have your letter to Lt Col Ingraham in my packet and did not give him same as he has been away for a few weeks. There are numbers of cripples going back every day and now it is an orders for all those who were in Civil Service to report back to Canada. A number of these men get the pay they were receiving in Canada besides the Service's pay & still they are to go back without going to France. Some Government, believe me and the sooner it is put out of existence the better it will be for all Canadians. As soon as the Election takes place can't forget that all sensible soldiers will vote for Laurier. We have had a raid nearly every night last week on London or vicinity and they have done a great deal of damage all round. A lot of the people in London have dug-outs in their back yards and when a raid is on the "Tubes" are crowded. I got a great surprise the other day when I received a letter from Charles Fixsoth [?] and he wanted me to go to London & see him as he lives at this address. C T Fixsoth [?] 37 Kempshoth [?] Road, Streolham [?] Common, London S.W. 16. He got to know I was over here through Genevie [?] Howell afterwards getting my address from Aunt illegible. I wrote him back and then he wrote me to be sure and come also sent me his picture which was very good. There is only himself & wife. He said he was in Hawkesbury 25 years ago & saw you & remembers two kiddies & that my Mother was dead and wanted to know if I was one of them. He is an actor & claims he is not too old to leave the game at 47 years of age. As soon as I get leave will go to see him for it is nice to know there is someone in this old Country you know for it is strange going around by yourself. Saw some of the Hawkesbury boys in the 185th and they are still kicking about and have been here a long time. R.J. McD. & Rod Gillis are in the 85th. These are lovely nights for air raids and believe me they will all be moving over here from Germany very soon. Received a couple of bundles of papers lately but do not receive them very often for the ships illegible illegible takes the mail and everything. Love to all at home & tell Mother to drop a line for old times sake & hope you are both enjoying life as usual. Your affec Son Jack P.S. Write me when you have time. P.S. Your letter dated Sept 13th just to hand also one from Dr. Major McD. & he is now in France and believe me they are busy men all round. You can easily see by his letters in regard to my case that they won't let me go back for I have tried but in vain. Glad all are well & doing nicely in every way. Bye Bye for now Jack |
