| Description: | Black and white photograph depicting grand opening celebrations of the Canso Causeway on August 13, 1955. The image is taken from Aulds Cove and overlooks the south side of the Strait of Canso as well as Port Hastings and Port Hawkesbury which can be seen in the distance. There are numerous boats seen gathered in the Strait of Canso, approximately 12, one of which is the HMCS Quebec which is surrounded by a cloud of smoke after firing a celebratory salvo in honour of the Causeways opening. The Causeway can be seen to the left of the image, with a large crowd of people gathered along the roadway, overlooking the events in the Strait. Just before the roadway begins on the Aulds Cove side is a parking lot lined with numerous cars and 4 busses. To the right of the image, more people can be seen lined along the water overlooking the celebrations. There is an airplane flying overhead in the top right of the image. "Official Opening Day - August 13/55" is written in black lettering near the top of the image. |
