| Description: | This photograph was taken during the construction of the Canso Causeway. The description at the bottom of the photograph says " A crew is shown filling the final gap between Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia as construction of the Canso Causeway neared completion on 1954. The project was announced in October 1951, and the first rock fill was deposited in September 1952. The rock fill was completed on Dec. 31, 1954. The first official vehicle crossed the Causeway in May 1955, a month after the first train had crossed the new link. " The photograph shows a dump truck unloading gravel into the construction site along with a small bulldozer right beside it. There is a man standing( Christopher DeCoste from Havre boucher ) in between the two machines wearing a white hard hat. A road can be seen in the upper left side of the photo with a truck and a crane on it. There are 6 buildings on the top of the hill and lots of trees in the background scene. A train can be seen passing through the right side of the photograph. Two men can be seen standing above the final gap. The water running through the gap is from the Strait of Canso. A copher dam can be seen behind the men. |
