| Description: | A black and white photograph taken during the official opening of the Canso Causeway to railway traffic on April 18, 1955, and the first passenger train to cross over. The image is taken from the Cape Breton side of the Strait of Canso, looking over at Cape Porcupine and Auld's Cove. The canal appears to still be under construction, and there is a construction zone to the right of the swing bridge, with various machinery and materials. There is a train traveling along the Causeway moving towards Cape Breton. There are approximately 6 cars parked on the side of the causeway, and a crane on the other side of the road. People are lined up on the Cape Breton side of the canal, watching the train pass over. There are also people gathered further up on hill, watching the events. An inscription on the back of the photograph reads "official opening of the causeway to traffic May 14, 1955". |
