Transcription: *Illegible note in top left corner* D.MACLEAN, GENERAL MERCHANT ORANGEDALE, C.B. Dec 17/17 Dear Jack, I am glad McLean got the appointment of game warden I impressed on him the fact you had to work hard to get the appointment. I was over (B)illegible work after completing it and it was then in good shape. It has rained so much since that it is in bad shape again, I do not know exactly how much it cost as he only made on this pay roll for native[?] labour here which amounted to about 350.00. I presume he and his four teams would use up about 400.00 and[?] more, Candidly the only thing I saw superior about his work was due to his heavy (Page 2) teams. Another thing to bare in mind is that none of our local men ever had the expenditure of so much money at one time. However we are thankful to get the road in its present shape, and would suggest that you have Mr Yorston expend the balance of the money in hauling gravel and putting it in the worst places. Bond[?] says the best time to gravel would be in October. I saw where you visited Baddeck a short time ago, I presume you discussed the situation with the Premier. The Campaign is illegible going to be Anti French and a ground[?] play waving[?]. I dont believe that will save them, Yours sincerely Dan
