| Description : | The photo is of the first convent in Port Hood. In July of 1909, the building was occupied by the family of future Nova Scotia premier, Angus L. MacDonald. Members of the family are posed on the front steps to the house. Standing a bit apart is Lewis MacDonald. A white picket fence is visible next to the house in the left of the photo. An outer building, possibly a barn is just visible behind the house in the bottom right of the photo. The photo is attached to a white piece of paper. |
| Commentaires : | Samuel MacDonnell built this house in 1865 and lived there until he built the Dungarry Stone House. He made the house available to the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame and in 1884 the nuns occupied it and made it into the first convent and convent school in Port Hood. In 1898 the Sisters moved into a new, larger convent. Lewis and Veronica MacDonald moved there family into the house in 1905. In 1948 Dr. Daniel MacLellan bought the house and he operated his dental office out of the home. After Dr. MacLellan left Port Hood in the early 1970s, Tommy Batherson obtained the property and he had the house demolished. As the MacDonald family were occupying the house at the time the picture was taken, it is reasonable to assume that the individuals in the photo are members of the MacDonald family. The gentlemen off to the left, bears a striking resemblance to Lewis MacDonald (Angus Ls father) and is almost certainly him. |
