| Description: | A view of the centre of Port Hood as it burns during the fire of 1942. The picture seems as though it was taken from about the location of the present Co-op. A label is attached to the back of the photo. The photo is attached to a piece of white paper with glue. This is a copy of an original photo. |
| Narrative: | On July 2, 1942 fire swept through the business district of Port Hood. It is believed the fire began in Rory MacDougalls store. The fire coincided with the failure of several of the local mining operations. The financial problems were too much for the town of Port Hood to bear and it was forced to petition the province to rescind its town charter. On August 31, 1946 Port Hood officially reverted to the Municipality of Inverness and in doing so became the first town in Nova Scotia to give up its charter. Allan Kennedy was from Inverness but he worked closely with Dr. Duncan Chisholm of Port Hood. His drugstore was located next door to Dr. Chisholm's house. The drugstore was built circa 1890. Doctors working for Dr. Chisholm (i.e. Dr. Ronald St. John MacDonald) lived in the upstairs apartment. |
