| Commentaires : | Donald Smyth MacDonell (1892-1974) was the son of Sarah (MacLellan) and John Archibald "Garanaich" MacDonell of Judique Intervale. On November 20, 1923 he married Florence MacDonald (1886-1958) of West Bay Road. They were married at St, Ninian's Cathedral in Antigonish. The couple spent the first year of their marriage on the MacDonell farm at Judique Intervale but in 1924 they moved to Detroit. Donald worked as a train engineer at the Ford Motor Plant and Florence operated a Boarding House out of the family home. They moved back to Cape Breton in 1933 due to the effects of the Depression. Donald inherited, from his father John Archie MacDonell, a large house and property in Port Hood. After three months of renovations to the big house, they opened the Oceanside Tourist Home (known locally as the Oceanside Hotel), and accepted paying guests. They added the cabins in 1937. It was one of the few downtown buildings to survive the fire of 1942. The MacDonells ran the Oceanside for 25 years, until Florence's death in 1958. |
