| Description: | Photographic postcard featuring a view of the front and side of Hillcrest Hall. There is a car parked out front. A man (perhaps E.O. Leadbetter) is leaning against the car and has one foot on the running board. A shed is visible at the right and another building can be seen at the left. |
| Narrative: | Ebeneezer Oscar (E.O) Leadbetter (1877-1955) built Hillcrest Hall for his family home about 1910. Until the mines flooded in 1911, Hillcrest hall had electricity. E.O was a successful merchant who operated a store across from where Sam Smiths farm once was. He and his family lived above this store before Hillcrest Hall was built. E.O. moved to Truro in 1923 where he became involved with the Orange Crush Company. It was he who renamed it to Crystal Springs. Although he moved away, E.O. never forgot Port Hood. In 1946 he donated an electric organ to St. Stephen's Church. Previous to this he lived above his store which was just across the road. The home still stands and operates as Hillcrest Hall Country Inn.. |
