| Description : | Photograph of Obediah Edmund Smith. He is photographed from roughly the chest up. He is wearing a three piece suit. It appears to be a studio portrait. This is a copy of a photo from circa 1925. |
| Commentaires : | Obediah Edmond Parker (O.E.) Smith (1863-1934) was the youngest child of John Smith and Ann Ross of Port Hood Island.. O.E. received his early education on Port Hood Island and likely attended the Academy in Port Hood. After graduating from Mount Allison Commercial College, he was employed by the firm of J.E. Morse & Company Ltd of Halifax as one of their travellers. By his fourth year with the tea company, O.E. was made a junior partner and vastly improved Morses shipping practices. In 1897, O.E. Smith bought the firm of J.E. Morse and business continued to prosper. In 1899 he married Ada Sargent but he continued to concentrate on the business. For his honeymoon, he and Ada traveled to China to buy tea! O.E. was director of a large number of business establishments and he was also very involved in charitable and educational endeavours, particularly those with a focus on children. When he passed away in 1934, a permanent trust was established in the sum of $1,893,320.43 of which a percentage was to be paid out to 23 different charitable, educational and philanthropic institutions. Local bequests were 5% to the Inverness County Memorial Hospital, 1% to Jubilee United Church, 1% to St. Stephens United Church and 1% to the Public School Section Port Hood Island to be used to secure well qualified teachers and thus maintain a high standard of teaching in my old school. |
