| Description: | Photograph of the gypsum quarry at Mabou Harbour. Horses and men are working at quarrying the gypsum. The roof of a house is just visible at the top of the bank. This is a copy of a photo from circa 1920. |
| Narrative: | The first gypsum operation was by the Montreal-owned Nova Scotia Coal and Gypsum Company in 1890 and it was located at the mouth of the Harbour below Andrew Rankins house. In 1891, the company built a cribwork wharf and they installed $100,000 worth of machinery. In 1925, the company opened the mine near the mouth of Harbour and built another cribwork shipping pier in the following year. In 1929, 10,000 tons of gypsum were being shipped from the Harbour to Montreal and American ports. However, the effects of the Depression were being felt and by 1933, operations had been cut back drastically. A year later, the Company ceased operations, but kept the quarry in condition to start operations again as soon as the economic outlook was brighter this never happened. |
