| Commentaires : | Sidney Earle Smith (March 9, 1897 March 17, 1959) was born and raised on Port Hood Island, the son of Margaret (Ethridge) and John Parker Smith. He was educated at the Island school, Port Hood Academy, Kings College, Dalhousie University and Harvard University. His schooling was interrupted by his service in WWI he saw almost constant action, including Vimy Ridge and Passchendale. He was called to the Bar of NS in 1921. During his lifetime he held many positions, including, Dean of Dalhousie Law School, President of the University of Manitoba and President of the University of Toronto (the central building of the Faculty of Arts and Science is named after him). In 1957 John Diefenbaker appointed Sidney Secretary of State for External Affairs. Sidney traveled to Port Hood in 1958 and assured residents if the Diefenbaker government were re-elected a causeway or breakwater would be constructed to Port Hood Island. Diefenbaker was re-elected and work began almost immediately. Sidney Smith never saw the project completed. He died suddenly of a stroke in 1959. |
