| Commentaires : | The photo was taken on July 22, 1964 at the unveiling of the cairn dedicated to Sidney Smith. Sidney Earle Smith (March 9, 1897 March 17, 1959) was born and raised on Port Hood Island. He was a WWI veteran. After the war, Sidney went on to become a lawyer and a professor of law. By 1929, he was Dean of Dalhousie's law school. In 1934, he left the Maritimes to become president of the University of Manitoba. In 1945, he was appointed the president of the University of Toronto where he remained for 12 years. Sidney became a prominent member of the Progressive Conservative Party and was appointed as Secretary of State for External Affairs. After holding the position for two years, Smith died suddenly of a stroke in 1959. Perley Watts Smith (1892-1978), author of The Smiths of Cape Breton, and a cousin of Sidney's, designed the cairn to commemorate his cousin. The cairn is located in view of Sidneys Island home and is close to the location of the old Academy. On the northern side of the cairn are 2 stones one from Kellys Mountain, near Sydney and the Atlantic Ocean and one from Seymour Mountain, near Vancouver and the Pacific Ocean. The stones represent the students from coast to coast with whom Sidney worked at the University of Toronto. The cairn was unveiled on July 22, 1964 by Sidneys wife, Harriet. Among the many in attendance were Premier Robert Stanfield and University of Toronto President Claude Bissell. The flags at the ceremony were the Red Ensign. The Red Ensign was replaced by the Maple Leaf in 1965. |
