| Description : | Document of beautifully presented text of the address given to Fr. Donald MacPherson on behalf of the parishioners of St. Peters on the occasion of his 25th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. The words are handwritten. There are bells in the upper left hand corner and roses on the right. Bunches of roses can be seen throughout the document. The text reads: To The Reverend Donald MacPherson, Parish Priest, Port Hood, N.S. Reverend and Dear Father, On this the twenty-fifth anniversary of your ordination to the holy Priesthood, your parishioners have gathered here to do you honor, and to express their appreciation of the indefatigable zeal and unfailing interest which you have always shown in their behalf. Called by God to continue His mission on earth, you in fullness of your soul, have generously responded, and during these past twenty-five years, following the example of the Master, you have gone about doing good. Having been ordained, you soon enshrined yourself in the hearts of the people of Glendale, your first mission. However, at the outbreak at the Great War, leaving all that was dear, you gladly offered yourself to administer to the spiritual wants of the soldiers on the battle-scarred fields of France. It is not for us to attempt to eulogize your splendid work during those memorable four years. Countless souls were prepared by you for their journey to their heavenly home and thousands of weary hearts were gladdened by your kind and consoling words during moments of anxiety and depression. To us, the people of Port Hood, you have been known during the past seven years. Coming as successor to our venerable Monsignor it was not long until we learned to 1ove and respect you Each day we see your untiring zeal for the furtherance of God's kingdom and your unceasing efforts to make us better Catholics and Christians. We recall your comforting words in the confessional, sending away the penitent sinner, his soul nearly adorned with God's all powerful grace, ready once more to tread the pathway that leads to eternal life. Daily we observe your solicitude for the spiritual welfare of the sick and aged of your flock. The devotion and attention we have seen you show to the dying furnish us an idea of the value of our immortal souls and remain with us as an incentive when besieged on all sides of Satan and his band of evil ones. To the poor and afflicted you are most generous and bountiful. Your interest in the younger lot f your flock is no less intense, and, indeed you can be aptly called "The friend of the children". In a word your life is an example to all. Yet your activities are not confined solely to your parish. In any matter tending towards the advancement of the community your helpful advice is always timely, and you invariably lend a willing hand. Thus can be readily understood the confidence and esteem shown you by our separated brethren. Twenty-five years of your priestly career have been spent in the faithful service of the Master. Dear Father, accept our heartfelt congratulations, and our sincere wishes that God will continue to shower on you His choicest blessings. May you long remain as our spiritual Father administering to our needs. While we know that your ideal standard of values places little or no importance on things material, nevertheless we ask you to accept this gift as a token of our love and respect. | Commentaires : | Fr. Donald MacPherson was pastor of St. Peters Roman Catholic Church from 1919 until 1957. He was ordained on August 15, 1901. However, his 25th anniversary was celebrated on August 17, 1926 because August 15 fell on a Sunday. This address was prepared by the parishioners and signed by the wardens. |
