| Narrative: | Veronica Perry (1854-1943) was born and raised in Tignish, Prince Edward Island. She was the daughter of Stanislaus Perry - a former Speaker of the PE Legislative Assembly and subsequently one of the Liberal federal members for Prince County, and Margaret Carroll - an immigrant from Ireland. Veronica completed her high school education in the Tignish Convent School run by the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal. She continued her studies at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown and then became a school teacher in Prince County. She married Lewis MacDonald in January, 1875. She was fluent in both French and English and after moving to Cape Breton with her husband she acquired a command of the Gaelic language. Their first three children were born in PEI and the remaining eleven were born in Cape Breton - 11 of the 14 survived into adulthood. The children were James Francis, William A, Stanley, Angus Lewis, Joseph, Margaret, John Lewis, Mairi, Oswin, John Colin and Dan Lewis. |
| History of Use: | This was a family portrait. It was on loan to the Celtic Music Centre in Judique before it was donated to the Chestico Museum. |
