| Commentaires : | Lewis MacDonald (1845 - 1926) was born and raised in Broad Cove, Inverness County, where he acquired his formal schooling. He was the son of James MacDonald, a farmer, and Margaret Gillis. He was one of ten siblings and in early life moved to Prince Edward Island to earn a living. Around 1880 he and Veronica came to Broad Cove where they owned and operated a 100 acre subsistence farm. Lewis also worked for the Broad Cove Coal Company in Inverness and was appointed a justice of the peace in the 1880's. In circa 1905 Lewis and Veronica and family moved to the newly incorporated town of Port Hood. Lewis already had a lawyer brother and three sisters living in this community. He was appointed stipendiary magistrate for the town over the next two decades. He also found employment in local projects such as the construction of a breakwater to Port Hood Island which was underway in 1905. He and his wife were strong promoters of education and six of their children completed university studies at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, and five of those continued on to do post graduate studies. |
