| Description : | Photograph of Stanley MacDonell. He is kneeling by the monument to Lt. Col. John MacDonnell at Queenston, Ontario. You can read the inscription, Site of Redan Battery Near this spot Lieut-Col John MacDonnell Attorney General of Upper Canada was mortally wounded 13th October 1812. Trees are in the background. Stanley is wearing jeans, a maroon sweatshirt and a blue hat. |
| Commentaires : | Lt. Colonel John MacDonnell (1785-1812) was born near Aberchalder in the Scottish Highlands. In 1792 the family emigrated to Upper Canada and Settled in Glengarry Co. He studied law and in 1811 became the Attorney General for Upper Canada. When the War of 1812 broke out, he was involved in forming a militia. He fought alongside General Brock at Queenston Heights and took up Brocks command when he was killed. MacDonnell was also fatally wounded and he died of his injuries the next day. His remains were later reinterred beneath the Brock Monument at Queenston Heights. Stanley MacDonell in the picture would be a distant cousin of Lt. Colonel John MacDonnell. Stanley is descended from Donald "Ban" MacDonell - an uncle of Lt. Colonel John MacDonnell. |
