| Narrative: | The train for the Diocesan pilgrimage started in Sydney. People from Port Hood took the train from here to Point Tupper the train left the Station at 6 PM on a Monday evening. When they got to Point Upper, the car coupled onto the train from Sydney and then they went across to Mulgrave on the ferry. The train picked up people along the way to Pictou which is as far as the Diocese of Antigonish extended. Then it was on to Quebec. You arrived at the Shrine in time for the 9 AM mass on Wednesday. You left for home Thursday evening and you were back in Port Hood Saturday morning. Most people took a box of food with them and there was a stove at the end of each car to make tea. If you had some extra money, the dining car was also an option. Many also took a pillow and blanket and slept in their seats. Reggie MacDougall from Port Hood was the conductor on the train on occasion and he always gave a bit of extra attention to the people from his hometown! Annie Marcella Annie the Shaymaker MacDonald and her daughter Peggy are in the front Peggy is in the wheelchair and Annie is behind her. The photo was posted on Facebook and we added coloured Xs on the image to help with identifications. Annie and Peggy have a red X. The man with the blue X is Johnny MacIsaac of the Chestico Tea Room. The man with the green X is Willie Joe Doucet from Inverness and the lady with the pink X is Theresa Doyle from Inverness. The lady with the yellow X is possibly Marcella (MacDonald) Chisholm from Port Hood. Other people from Port Hood on the pilgrimage but not spotted in the photo are Betty Watts, Margaret (Sam) Campbell, Ronald Dan Campbell, Jessie "Mrs. Duncan Sam" Campbell and Sandra (Sutherland) MacDonald. |
