| Narrative: | Aloysius MacDonald (1895-1962) was born in Port Hood to Jessie (Gillis) & Angus R. MacDonald. In 1913 his father died and he was given 72 acres of land in Harbourview by his parents. His occupation at that time was noted as fisherman. Aloysius enlisted in WWI in Montreal on August 9, 1916. He was a Private with the 13th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. His regimental number was 1078498, Prior to enlisting he belonged to the Active Militia - The 4th Field Canadian Engineers. He was wounded in the war, resulting in his left leg having to be amputated at the knee. He had an infected leg wound and the doctors had to cut off more and more of the leg to avoid sepsis. Following the war he attended McGill university, and did postgraduate work at the University of British Columbia, University of Southern California and the California Institute of Technology where he studied architecture. He then settled in Las Vegas where he prepared architectural drawings for a number of Las Vegas apartment houses and shopping centres. His obituary referred to him as a prominent architect. He served as chairman of the Board of Examiners and Appeals for Las Vegas from 1955-57. He was a member of the Nevada State Board of Architects since 1949, serving as treasurer from 1952 -1960. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, and of the Society of Professional Engineers. He was past commander of Marleau J Gragin Post 156, Canadian Legion, and a member of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club. He was buried in the Canadian Legion section of Woodlawn Cemetery, Las Vegas. |
