| Description: | Two framed 8 ½ x 11 pieces of paper that have been framed and tell the story of Captain David Smith being lost on the ice. A snow-covered view of Port Hood Island is included on the first piece of paper. The article was originally written in 1889 by Mabou school girl Jennie Smith who was a great granddaughter of Captain David Smith. The wooden frame is covered with fabric. |
| Narrative: | Captain David Smith (1742-1789) was the eldest son of Hannah (Harding) & Gameliel Smith of Massachusetts. He married Rebecca Lombard in 1767. The Smiths were Loyalists. Captain David Smith, his wife and 5 sons came to Guysborough in 1784. In 1786 the family moved to Port Hood settling on what is now Port Hood Island. They were the first permanent settlers here. On the morning of February 19, 1789, Captain David Smith and two of his sons went hunting seals on the drift ice north west of their home. A change of wind stranded them. Captain David attempted to swim ashore but drowned. The two boys eventually came ashore and returned home the next day. |
