Description : | Award printed on tan paper with black writing in a black frame. Fellowship to American Association for the Advancement of Science |
Fonctions : | The American Association for the Advancement of Science was formed on September 20th, 1848 in Philadelphia, formerly known as The Association of American Geologists and Naturalists (AAAS Archives, unknown). This was the first permanent organization that emerged in the national scientific community in The United States (AAAS Archives, unknown). It promoted the development of science and engineering across the country and represented the interests of all its disciplines (AAAS Archives, unknown). The growth of AAAS continued following its formation because meetings were held in cities across The United States and through a partnership with Science magazine (AAAS Archives, unknown). Recipients of the Fellowship are members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and determined through an election by their peers (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2014). This is awarded to a member that has scientifically or socially distinguished themselves (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2014). Potential areas of distinction include: significant contributions to research; teaching; technology; services to professional societies; administration in academe, industry and government; and communicating and interpreting science to the public (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2014). |
