| Description : | Three-piece hurricane lamp is from the 1940's. The base (A) of the lamp has a gold stand, with a white glass base. It has hand-painted pink flowers with greenery. At the top of the base is more gold hardware, this is where the bulb and the power switch are. The power switch is a three-way key switch. A brown cord comes from the bottom that plugs into the electrical socket for power. There are green and red cords leading to a small bulb. The next attachment is a white glass globe (B) that sits over the bulb. It has the same hand-painted pink flowers and greenery as the base. A clear glass hurricane lampshade sits at the top of this globe. |
| Commentaires : | This lap was a wedding gift to Allen and Phyllis Wark from Phyllis' brother, Darrell Roode. This was given to the couple in 1948, on July 12. This lamp was then used by the couple in their living room for many years. "They loved the esthetics of the lamp and it had sentimental value as it was a wedding gift"-Susan Radford (Daughter). |
| Fonctions : | Hurricane lamps were originally used to burn oil-soaked wicks. The tall shade was important to protect the flame from being blown out by the wind or rain, hence the name "hurricane" lamp. It also protected objects around it from catching fire. As technology progressed, the style was used with electric bulbs. This is more for the look of the lamp than practicality, as a blub does not need the same protection from elements as a flame. |
