Commentaires : | Reported to be original to Riverton School. : Most rural schools had a table in the corner with either a water pail or an earthenware water cooler. The water pail had a dipper that students used to retrieve water. The water pail was seen to be unhygienic and as a result many rural schools replaced the bucket with a covered earthenware water cooler with a push button tap at the bottom. However, many schools could not afford this advancement. Other schools procured an earthenware cooler but lost it as a result of carelessness. In the winter, the temperature in the schoolroom would drop during the night. If excess water was left in the cooler over night, the water could freeze and crack the cooler. This cooler was produced by Western Stoneware sometime after 1930. Western Stoneware was in operation in Monmouth, Illinois from 1906 until 1975. Cochrane, Jean. The One Room School in Canada.
