Description : This white, wooden sign with black letters features the text, "Middledale School Section No. 14 1/2." The text has been painted by hand using upper case letters. It is neat. The sign is rectangular.
Commentaires : This white, wooden sign was a school sign for Middledale School. Two neighbouring, rural communities ( Middlefield and Pleasantfield) in Queens County, Nova Scotia decided to combine their resources and build one school for both communities. This school was built in a dale ( a valley) - hence the name "Middledale." Since one community was in section 14, and the other community in section 15, they decided that this new school would be section 14 1/2. This was circa 1900. The donor, Nancy Bower before her marriage, taught at Middledale School immediately prior to and during World War II. She marrried locally. The Lttle White Schoolhouse Museum has several artifacts from that time, including five former students, all brothers, who served in the RCAF. The children in Middledale School wrote to a serving Canadian soldier, F79694 Pte. S. Freeman. An original letter from the soldier and a transcribed version are part of the LWSM collection. After the school closed the building was moved and used for various purposes. Fortunately the school sign was stored elsewhere. The schoolhouse was lost to fire. Nancy Kempton obtained the school sign and donated it to the LWSM.
