Description : Metal hand crank sewing machine on a wooden base with a wooden cover. The machine is decorated with a floral design. Includes various attachments and accessories.
Commentaires : The sewing machine was owned by Barbara Clark's Grandmother Bidwell. It was made in 1922 and was purchased in Halifax around 1930. The machine made a few trips across the water during WWII. The Allied sticker on it is from one of these moves. Barbara's Aunt Gillian Rose remembers turning the wheel for her mother when she was a little girl. The following is from Barbara's father's memoirs "A Good Life", which mentions the machine. "At that time I bought my first car - an ancient Ford convertible sedan that I named Boanergese (a Biblical reference to the Son of Thunder). It was inconvertible when I bought it, but I made a new top for it out of an old sailor's hammock, using my mother's ancient hand-driven sewing machine. I greatly improved my ability to deal with icy roads by driving it on the ice on Lake Ontario in the winter - not recommended (even though the ice was pretty thick).
