Description : | A beaded black velvet bag, trimmed around the edges in red. There are two flaps, one on each side and a red string handle. It is lined in brown polished cotton, the top opening has a red fringe. The design on the flaps and body of purse is the same on both sides - three flowers each section in blue, yellow, red, white. |
Fonctions : | The Mi'kmaq, who refer to themselves as L'n'uk, began creating beaded objects like this purse after the introduction of trade with the Europeans. After 1600, Mi'kmaq women began creating items that were strictly for sale to the Europeans including quillwork objects, woven baskets, and beaded items. The tradition of beadwork continues today and is a skill that is carried on through the generations. |
