Description : Gold frame is 6cm wide; glass frame is outlined in a 7cm wide black and gold trim border; 3 masted ship is seen on it's port side; full sail's; center mast has a white w/red trim flag with blue letter "K", Canadian flag on last mast; 3 crew men & Captain seen out on deck; a smaller, 2 masted ship & sailboat seen in background; cloudy day; wooden buoy floating on ship's port side; "THE SPECTULATOR", is written in gold lettering, bottom center.
Fonctions : Donor, Mrs. Porter, (died on April 23, 1997), was a descendant of Thomas,as Killam, major owner of the Speculator. Paining was commissioned for either the vessel's owner's or commander and it would have hung in a Yarmouth, NS home or office. Vessel was built at Yarmouth, NS in 1864 for Thomas Killam and other's. 172' long, 33.5' breadth, 19.5' depth of hold, 747 tons. It was lost at sea in the Gulf of Mexico in 1877.
