The background port of Flushing, with its typically Dutch windmill can be seen through the mist in the left background. The pilot cutter can be seen in the right background. On the foremast can be seen the pilot flag. The ships name pennant can be seen at the mainmast truck. Flying from the mizzen truck can be seen flags which represent the 3rd distinguishing pennant and the numbers 8219, the Mary Durkees unique signal code. The Red Ensign signified the vessel to be British. Painting also depicts the figurehead. Painting is in a wooden frame, painted gold.
Commentaires : Though this ship was built in 1861, the painitng was done in 1867 and shows how important the shipping was to the history of Yarmouth.  Shipowners and business of Yarmouth were not in favour of confederation since they felt that a centralized government would take away from the primary businesses of the Atlantic Provinces, ie shipping.  While this may seem anti-confederate it was an important part of Yarmouth's, and Nova Scotia's history, and shouldn't be swept under the carpet.
Fonctions : The Ship Mary Durkee, built at Meteghan, N.S. in 1861 for Amasa Durkee of Yarmouth.  The ship remained under Yarmouth ownership until 1884 when she was sold to Norwegian interests and re-registered at Drammen under the name  Magdalena.  She was wrecked in 1889. Paintings of this nature were usually commissioned by the ship's owner or its captain. Captain Crosby commissioned this one in 1867.
