| Description : | A postal cancellation stamp (C) in wooden case (B) and cover (A). The stamp (C) reads, "Alberton # 1" and is made of a rubber material. The handle is made of hardwood. There is a brass ferrule that connects the metal head to the hardwood handle. The box is made of wood. The inside of the case has a ink pad at one end (this is where the head would lay, while the handle rests at the other end). The case looks worn, and the cover has a chip out of the wood. |
| Commentaires : | A cancellation stamp is a postal marking applied on a postage stamp or postal stationery to deface the stamp and prevent its re-use. Cancellation stamps come in a huge variety of designs, shapes, sizes and colors. Cancellations commonly include the date and post office location where the stamps were mailed. The term "postal marking" sometimes is used to refer specifically to the part that contains the date and posting location, although the term often is used interchangeably with "cancellation". Cancellations can affect the value of stamps to collectors, positively or negatively. The cancellations of some countries have been extensively studied by philatelists and many stamp collectors and postal history collectors collect cancellations in addition to the stamps themselves.
