Commentaires : | A large iron anvil attached to a sturdy wood stump. One end of the anvil is flat with blunt rectangular end, this is called the heel. Next to the heel there is a small hole and a sqaure hole. The small circular hole is called a pritchel hole ( iron was placed over this hole when the blacksmith was punching hole is the iron). The bigger square hole is called the hardy hole. A tool called a hardy (a cutting tool) was placed in the hardy hole. The blacksmith held a piece of iron over the hardy and pounded down on it, cutting the iron. Towards the front part of the anvil there is an edge like feature which is called the chipping block and was used to make a bend in the iron. At the very front of the anvil the is what is called a horn (because it is shaped like a horn). The horn was used to shape iron into curved or round objects such as rings, links, and curls. Horn also known as beak, pike, bickern, and cone. |
