Description : | Percussion cap muzzle loading cavalry pistol. The lockplate is marked Tower 1855 and bears Queen Victoria's crown emblem and the letters VR (for Victoria Regina). The butt of the pistol is marked VPEI 15. The ramrod is stored underneath the barrel of the pistol. |
Commentaires : | The percussion cap firing system was developed in 1805 and was a significant advancement from the earlier flintlock mechanism. The hammer on a percussion cap mechanism strikes against an explosive cap, similar to the caps in modern toy cap guns, sending a tiny explosion into the gun barrel, igniting the black powder which fires the bullet. It was less prone to dampness than the flintlock system since it had no exposed flashpan, and almost always fired successfully. The flintlock system, reliant on the spark created as the flint in the hammer hit the strike plate, was much more apt to misfire. |
Fonctions : | This is a pattern 1842 cavalry, or lancer, pistol that was used by the Prince Edward Island 1st Mounted Rifles, a volunteer militia company, during the 1860's. |
