Description : White naval hat with a black ribbon, called a tally, around the rim. Gold letters on the tally read H.M.C.S. Bonaventure.
Commentaires : The Royal Canadian Navy was founded in 1910, prior to which the British Royal Navy provided naval protection for Canada. It existed in this form until 1968, when it was amalgamated with the Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Canadian Army to become the Canadian Armed Forces. The naval component was renamed Canadian Forces Maritime Command (MARCOM). Caps of this sort were standard issue, and sailors wore the tally with great pride. The tradition of cap tallies ended with the amalgamation of the forces in 1968 and the loss of the old-style, square-rig uniforms. The tally on this cap identifies it as belonging to a sailor who served aboard the H.M.C.S. Bonaventure. The H.M.C.S. Bonaventure was a Majestic-class aircraft carrier that served in the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Forces Maritime Command from 1957 to 1970. It was the last aircraft carrier to serve in the Canadian Forces. During its period of service the Bonaventure carried a force of McDonnel Douglas F2H-3 Banshee jet fighters, Grumman CS2-F Tracker ASW aircraft, and Sikorsky HO4S helicopters. The Banshee fighters were retired in 1962, and new Sea King helicopters were added to the ship's arsenal in 1964. The H.M.C.S. Bonaventure was retired in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1970, and scrapped in Taiwan in 1971.
Fonctions : Worn by sailors in the Royal Canadian Navy. The cap tally identified the ship that the sailor served on.
