| Description : | Green patch in the shape of a maple leaf with the crest of the 26th New Brunswick Battalion. |
| Commentaires : | The 26th Battalion was incorporated as New Brunswick's infantry unit on 3 November 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James McAvity. The battalion trained for eight months in the Saint John Armouries and an additional three months in Plymouth, England, before being sent to the French front in September, 1915. The 26th Battalion fought in numerous World War I battles at St. Eloi, Ypres, Courcellette, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70 and Passchendale before finally returning home in May, 1919. The 26th Battalion was one of 260 battalions, 13 mounted rifle regiments, 13 railway troop battalions, and 5 pioneer battalions that formed the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). The CEF was formed for overseas service during World War I, and distinguished itself in decisive battles at Vimy Ridge and Amiens, among others. The needlework on the patch was done by Walter MacLellan of Indian River, Prince Edward Island, while in a military hospital. Walter MacLellan died as a result of wounds received in battle at Arras, France, during World War I. |
