Description : | Cast iron bullet shaped sheath mounted on an "S" curved stand and circular base. Sheath is hollow. Base stamped with maker's mark. |
Commentaires : | Sheath portion of a Goffering iron (also known as a Finishing, Italian or Tally iron.) These irons where used to smooth the edges of clothes, cuffs, and collars and more commonly for finishing bows and awkward ribbons. These hollow cylinders of iron were heated by inserting a metal poker-like rod. Then frilled cuffs and collars could be curled round the cylinder, and other trimmings, like ribbons, were moved across it. This iron is from the Matheson collection that was originally displayed in the old O'Leary drugstore. |
