Description :	Hand engraved scrimshaw on sperm whale tooth pigmented with Indian ink mounted on a square wooden base. On one side is an engraved and inked image of a woman wearing 19th century style dress and wreathed in vines and flowers. On the other side is engraved and inked a flowering shrub and an unnamed sailing ship with three masts. The artist carved their initials, "A.P." onto the base of the tooth.
Commentaires :	Scrimshaw is art made by sailors by engraving shells, bone, and teeth. This piece is from the Matheson collection and was originally on display at the old O'Leary drugstore.
