Commentaires : | Fire safety and prevention was an important element in the duties of all light keepers. Every precaution must be taken to avoid a fire and all necessary tools maintained in case a fire did erupt. Often buckets of water and sand were kept in the lighthouse, so that a quick response could mediate possible damage. This extinguisher is an early model of a chemical extinguisher maintained at the West Point lighthouse. The modern fire extinguisher was invented in 1818 by a British Captain, George William Manby. This first of the modern type of extinguishers consisted of a copper vessel of 13.6 litres of pearl ash (potassium carbonate) solution contained within compressed air. Later in 1881 the soda-acid extinguisher was invented by Almon Ganger. This extinguisher used the reaction between sodium bicarbonate solution and sulphuric acid to expel pressurized water. A vial was suspended in the cylinder containing concentrated sulphuric acid. Depending on the type of extinguisher, the vial of acid could be broken in one of two ways. One used a plunger to break the vial of acid, while the second released a lead bung that held the vial closed. Once the acid was mixed with the bicarbonate solution, carbon dioxide gas was expelled and thereby pressurized the water. The pressurized water was forced from the canister through a nozzle or a short length of hose. The above was taken from the Wikipedia website: Fire Extinguisher |
