Commentaires : This book was written by Rev. J.H. Ingraham who was born January 26, 1809 in Portland, Maine and died December 18, 1860. It is said that Joseph Holt Ingraham wrote so many books that there were those who claimed he was responsible for ten percent of the books published in the 1840s. He wrote a series of biblical romances, the most famous of which was "The Prince of the House of David", published in 1855, and which sold more than a million copies and was still in print until 1975. Ingraham had wanderlust in his blood; before the age of 17 he boarded a boat, left his home town in Maine, and headed for Buenos Aires, where he stayed for a few years. When he returned, he tried his hand at law and then, at teaching. At the same time as he taught in Mississippi, he began to write, publishing his first work, The Southwest, By a Yankee, in 1835. The first of his popular novels, Lafitte: The Pirate of the Gulf, was published the next year. Within ten years Ingraham had written some eighty novels. He died of an accidental gunshot wound, which occurred when he dropped his gun and was hit in the thigh. The bullet traveled up his side and Ingraham died ten days later of internal bleeding. This book was first published in 1855 and is on display in the parlour of the West Point Lighthouse.
