| Commentaires : | This was screen was used in a lighthouse during World War II to foil the German submarines known to be in the surrounding waters of Prince Edward Island. They were simply lowered over the light and fastened into place. The war screen is fastened to a wooden base for display purposes. Made of light-weight metal, it has a handle for lowering it into place over the light. The metal ring would fit securely on to the base of the light. The light would shine through the three metal parts attached to the apparatus. The screen was placed over the light and only allowed the light's rays to shine in certain directions limiting a ships ability to see the light. Ship's with legitimate business in the area would be supplied an Atlantic Coast List of Lights, Buoys and Fog Signals. This would enable them to be on the lookout for a light house in a specific location, even if only three small fingers of light could be seen due to the screen. The lighthouse keepers would get coded messages on the radio-telephone if enemy ships were believed to be in the area. The message would mention bacon or beef, for example. If it was bacon the, the war screen was to be put in place for a specific period of time. Maisie Adams, keeper of the New London Light noted there was a screen on the Front Range light ¼ mile from the lighthouse, which she would have to walk to no matter what time of night the call came in. She said that they usually had to leave the screen on for three hours. This artefact is said to be made by the Dominion Lighthouse Depot, Prescott, Ontario |
