Commentaires : | A collection of twenty five prickers used to clean out fuel lines in kerosene oil lamps. Two sizes are represented here, size 55 and 35. The size refers to the size or thickness of the wire "pricker" at the end of each wedge shaped galvanized steel strip. Other sizes were available, such as size 25, and 85. Each light house would have several of these, in various sizes, on hand. The wires broke easily and they were used often to aid in keeping the oil lamps burning with a good strong flame. They would be inserted into the pre heaters that were two small round bars that came down on each side of the blackened lamp burner .The wires would open up the fuel line that would get clogged with carbon and dirt. This style of galvanized steel prickers would have been used at the West Point Lighthouse and would have been Prescott made, meaning made at the Department of Marine and Fisheries-Dominion Lighthouse Depot in Prescott, Ontario, established in 1903. This depot made lenses and all related lighthouse keeping apparatus and supplied the D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) in Prince Edward Island and surrounding area. It was a center for experiments in illumination, light station equipment, and manufacturing. This source for lighthouse equipment would greatly reduce Canada's former dependence on foreign suppliers.
