Commentaires : The Dominion Experimental Fox Ranch was constructed on Central Street in Summerside, Prince Edward Island in 1925. Early ranchers basically had to experiment when it came to raising foxes in captivity. As the industry developed it was obvious that there was a need for experimental work to be done. In 1920, The Research Council of Canada and the Heath of Animals Branch of the Department of Agriculture started an experimental fox farm at the Mountain Road Research Station in Hull, Quebec. This ranch was found to be not enough, and the recommendation was put forth that a research station be established in Prince Edward Island. The Canadian National Silver Fox Breeders Association (CNSFBA) constructed the ranch buildings and pens. They also provided 25 pairs of registered silver foxes to stock the ranch. The Department of Agriculture furnished the laboratories and offices and also took care of staffing the station. The CNSFBA leased a portion of the property to the department of Agriculture for 99 years at only $1.00 a year. Nutrition was the main area of research along with fur development, reproduction and disease control. Dr. J.A. Allan, assisted in the planning of the Research Station and headed the staff for a number of years. The Dominion Experimental Fox Ranch operated for 44 years. In 1966, The Department of Agriculture announced the work of the experimental farm would be transferred to Ottawa, and the 4 employees were offered alternative employment. Final closure came in March of 1969; all foxes and mink in the ranch were pelted. An auction sale was held to dispose of items, which sold at low prices. The Town of Summerside purchased several of the pens to be used in the Town's dog pound. The house and shed were torn down. The Town of Summerside also purchased 6.94 acres of the land Nov. 3, 1970
