Description : Each rectangular-shaped iron plate is welded to the end of a long slender handle. One handle is forged at the top in the shape of a closed hook. Into this hook has been inserted a forged oval ring. The top of the other handle is flattened ( 5 cm wide ) with two curved indentations on one side. Handles are held together 5 cm above the plates with a large iron bolt. Plates are plain on the outside. Inside of one plate is plain, while the other plate is etched with two large circles and two smaller circles.
Commentaires : Unleavened breads used for the altar were baked between heated irons such as these. The pious emblems etched on plates would be imprinted on the bread. The small breads would be used for the Communion of the faithful while the large breads would be used by the Priest during the Consecration. These irons were given to Reverend Bernard Broderick by Mrs. McDonald's son, George F. McDonald.
Fonctions : These irons were used to make hosts or communion wafers for St. Margaret's Church in St. Margarets, N. B and St. Michael's by the Sea Church in Bayside, N. B. Mary Ann (Flynn) McDonald was devoted to making the hosts for St. Margaret's Church.
