Description : Richly handcrafted. Base is shaped in floral design. Fine filigree overlay on three sections of base. Between these filigree sections are three sections with fire enamel medallions of Crucified Christ, Mary and Joseph. Stem above base and lower node have been etched with simple floral designs. The larger node has been etched with intricate floral designs and is surrounded with six fired enamel inlaid accents. Bottom half of cup is covered with a fine filigree overlay. Host paten is plain on top and sits on a slightly elevated circular ring which fits inside lip of chalice. Inside ring is handcrafted with cross surrounded by leaf/vine design.
Commentaires : Acquired by Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph at St. Michael's Convent through a donation of Father Bannon. The chalice is the cup in which the wine and water of the Eucharistic Sacrifice is contained. It is usually made either of gold or of silver. The base may be round, hexagonal, or octagonal, and should be so wide that there is no fear of the chalice tilting over. Near the middle of the stem, between the base and the cup, there should be a knob, in order that the chalice, especially after the Consecration, when the priest has his thumb and index finger joined together may be easily handled. Often this knob is adorned with precious stones. The base and cup may be embellished with pictures or emblems, even in relief, but those on the cup should be about an inch below the lip of the chalice. The cup should be narrow at the bottom, and become gradually wider as it approaches the mouth. It should be at least eight inches in height.
Fonctions : This chalice and paten belonged to Father Thomas J. Bannon of Miramichi, NB.
