| Description: | Each glass candleholder is made of heavy clear glass. The base is octagonal shaped and tiered toward the base of Crucifix. Crucifix and Corpus are both made of the same clear glass. A knob shaped molding sits above the Crucifix and has an indentation in the center top. This indentation provides a place for the candle to be placed. Inside of base is hollow. |
| Narrative: | Father Leo Joseph Gerard Sullivan, Miramichi, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2015 at the age of 79, at the Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home, Miramichi. He was born in Chatham, NB, on September 12, 1936, a son of the late Ethel (Woods) and Dennis Sullivan. Father Leo is survived by his sister Mary Wainwright (Peterborough, ON), his brother Dennis and wife, Anna Marie (Miramichi), his sister Kay Schmidt (Edmonton, AB) and his brother Al (Bridgewater, MA.), as well as many nieces and nephews who were close to his heart. He was predeceased by his twin sister Ann Marie, his brother Joseph, his sister-in-law Dawn and his brothers-in-law Art and William. Father Leo studied at St. Thomas High School and upon graduating from St. Thomas University with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, attended Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax, NS. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Saint John by the Most Reverend A.B. Leverman on May 24, 1964 at St. Marys Church, Newcastle, NB. During his 51 years as a priest, Father Leo served in many parishes in the Diocese of Saint John. He served as an Associate Pastor at St. Michaels, Chatham and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Saint John. He served as a pastor in the following parishes: St. Raphaels, Blackville (1980-1981), the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Saint John (1981-1987), St. Patricks, Nelson and its missions (1987-1991), St. Michaels Basilica, Miramichi and St. Margarets (1991-1993), St. Gertrudes, Woodstock and its missions (1993-1999), Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Chatham Head and Most Pure Heart of Mary, Barnaby (1999-2004), and Sts. Peter and Paul, Bartibogue and its missions (2004-2007), from where he retired. During his time in St. Michaels, Parish Father Leo was successful in establishing the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He was also pastor of the Cathedral during the major restoration in preparation for the Centennial of its Consecration. As well, he served on the following diocesan committees: College of Consultors, Council of Priests and Priests Personnel Committee. Father Leo was considered one of the most beloved and respected priests of the Diocese, especially by his brother priests. He had an ease in speaking and in communicating Gods Word that led to a greater understanding of the Scriptures by his congregations. He also had a way about him that allowed him to develop a rapport with people of all ages. Father Leo loved to travel, especially as it allowed him to spend time with family and friends. He travelled throughout North and South America, Europe, Jamaica, and the Middle East. He had a lifelong love of learning and studied and read extensively. He did post-graduate studies in Family Life at St. Paul University, Ottawa in the mid 1970s. He was well known for his unique sense of humour and no one was quicker with a one liner. A special thank-you is extended to the staff of all the departments at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home for the care and compassion Father Leo received during his years as a resident there. Father Leos body will be resting at Mahers Funeral Home, 35 University Avenue, Miramichi, on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm, and on Monday from 2 to 4 pm. His body will be translated to St. Michaels Basilica, Miramichi, for Solemn Vespers at 7 pm followed by visitation afterward. His funeral Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Robert Harris followed by internment in St. Michael's Cemetery in Miramichi, NB. |
