| Description : | Base of monstrance sits on 3 gold-plated wrought iron legs (pedestal), each with a grapes and wheat design. Two tier circular base is adorned with a row of gold-plated beading and relief work, etched and hand hammered in floral and celestial designs. The small node closer to the base is adorned in a manner similar to base. The larger node is surrounded by 6 diamond shapes around outer edge with 6 floral designs in both upper and lower portion of node. Stem is plain. Center aperture is enclosed with gold-rimmed glass, accented on front with clear glass stones set around outer rim and gold-plated filigree design on inner rim . Entire aperture is surrounded, front and back by gold-plated filigree in grapes and wheat design . This filigree work is separated ( 2 cm on each side) from the metallic rays which radiate around the aperture. On the bottom of inside of aperture is a track for inserting ulna ( not included) . Rising from top center of metallic rays is a gold-plated cross centered with a red simulated ruby stone, surrounded by 4 beaded acorn (?) designs . Base of cross is adorned with wing shapes. Tips of arms of cross end in a floral/ leaf design. Back of cross is plain except for 8 small holes surrounding a circular opening used for attaching red stones to front. Filigree work attached at bottom of metallic rays is done in similar design as cross. Both cross and filigree work are attached with small nuts and bolts . The glass at back of aperture is surrounded by gold-plating and is hinged for opening and closing and has a clip style closure and gold-plated knob handle. Inside base of monstrance is plain. Case for monstrance is made of plywood and is covered on the exterior with black leatherette as are the interior sides. Back and font interior are covered in red felt with a padded red felt diamond shaped cushion ( 16 cm square ) glued in place 7 cm from top of back and front sections . Case closes with 3 metal clasp-type closures. |
