Description: A quilt in the pattern of Grandmother's Fan. The material used as the base of all of the fans is the same green and white patterned fabric. The rest of each fan is composed of tapered strips of fabric in various colours and various geometric and floral patterns. There are two 3 cm wide borders composed of strips of various geometric and floral patterns.
Narrative: This pattern first appeared in print in a Ladies Art Company catalogue of 1897. Prior to that, fans were common motifs in late nineteenth-century crazy quilts. Their popularity likely was due to the fad for decorating in the Japanese style, which was prompted by Americans' exposure to Japanese art at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. By the 1930s, fans were standard favourites for quilt patterns.
History of Use: This quilt was made by three sisters in Hopewell Cape NB. The women were Beatrice (Palmer) Ayer, Ethel (Palmer) Stewart and Eva Palmer. Beatrice was born in 1892 and died in 1970, Ethel was born in 1882 and died in 1972 and Eva was born in 1897 and died in 1982. They operated a Bed and Breakfast out of their family home and this quilt was likely used in the Bed and Breakfast. The Palmer family was originally from Dorchester, although the sisters were born and raised in Hopewell Cape. The Palmer family owned and operated one of the largest shipyards in Dorchester during the 1800's. The donor inherited this quilt from her Mother-in-law (Beatrice Ayer).
